Conventions of Magazine Page Lyout



Sight Sound Magazine

The magazine section title is positioned at the top of the page. It has been shown with a graphic blue background to provide a clear visual element and also this is used as a way of a starting point for the reader.

Within the way this magazine is presented it holds elements of a newspaper style. This shows to the reader that it’s portraying itself as an informative formal article. The influence of columns shows this.

The selected images are glossy and vibrant, this helps the reader visualise the story within the image and to help grasp a visual identification that relates to the theme of the content. The way this article is presented whereby it limits the amount of space and size for images to help boost the contents for the text. The text however holds elements of high amount of detail and the mode of address portrays an audience that is well in tune with relevant themes and films.

As this is only a magazine, it holds far too much information and by adding this much gives of a visual appeal that puts off the reader. This is because there is nothing that is eye catching to keep the readers interest.

On the other hand, if you are a particular type of audience that had the knowledge and research to identify with the contents of this magazine quickly, then it becomes a great interesting article because it offers the audience intertextual connections within the analysis of this film.

Within this magazine article it holds elements of interesting presentation, for example with the use of columns which helps control the amount of text, so as to make good use of page space. Regarding the font style, this article uses only three font faces with the added effect of italic for the strap lines and introductions. The size of font that is used is very formal and is not too big this is because this would help the reader look in more detail regards the description, plus it also helps with the proportions of the page layout.

Regarding the house style within this magazine extract, they use the same structure to the font and the layout, it all kept the identical so as to produce a professional appeal and its distinctive style.





SCREEN

The graphic logo is located at the top of the cover and should be the first thing the reader sees. It shows and projects the magazines identity. There is only one large image on this selected article. It is at the top of the page and it has been annotated. No cropping of this image has been done and it shows the surroundings for added effect. The Hue of this image is blue, this gives the feeling of bitterness also there has been the additional saturation of the image for the effect. The chosen photo is an interesting powerful image as it grasps the reader’s attention through the graphical story it tells. This is because it shows an action with limited colours to combine an emotional feeling. On the other hand the magazine ‘Screen’ has changed its’ mode of address, it comments on the picture and changes it into a humorous interpretation.

Within this magazine extract it holds a range of different font styles. By using too many font faces it makes it look visually confusing to the reader, although within this they have highlighted the font either by using a bold text or a choice of three colours, this helps the reader visualise.

The look of this article is very professional and informative plus it is presented in a way so that the reader sees a more formal image and the layout is not overlapping one another. Regarding the proportions between text and image, there is a good balance. It makes good use of the page as it fills it with an adequate amount of information plus there are no blank spots. Also there is a good gap between page edge and text, this shows excellent presentation and it is ease on the eye.
The page has been split up into two columns of information and at the end of the columns there are breakout boxes and this gives the reader quick summaries of extra evidence and points of interest.

Regarding the House style within this magazine extract, there is a range of font used, however, it is kept the same throughout the magazine and this gives off a distinctive style and it is easily recognisable to the audience.





Revue

The magazine logo is at the top located at either side of the page. It is in one bold colour with a white background. This is to highlight the contrast between the letters.

The selected main image is a vibrant wide angle shot of the two characters within the film. It brings forth a connotation of separation and this is shown through the way they are looking away from each other, this is in context to the film as it shows the relationship where by the actors Paul and Meryl Morgan, a Manhattan couple whose marriage is in danger. Plus there has been no cropping of this image to focus on the two characters. On the other hand, it presents people behind them, again this shows the lack of focus in terms of their relationship.

From viewing this extract I can see no difference within the style faced font, and the ‘house style’ follows the same suit throughout. The mode of address gets straight to the point of interest and it has no humour, nevertheless it gives informative descriptions. This has a positive effect on the reader as it helps them understand clearly what the magazine is putting forward.

As an added effect there has been a chosen individual type face for the headline, this has been presented in a bold text; this is because it wants to capture the reader’s interest and thoughts. This has been positioned on top of the main image, this enhances the effect as it makes it easier for the reader to cast between image and headline. There has been use of a range of three different sized fonts to either highlight a quote from the text or to present a call to action. This gives the reader anchorage to visualize and understand a quick review of the film.

The presentation of this article is clear it makes good use of space. I like the vibrancy of the wide image as it covers the entire width of the page and I feel that it shows an interesting story. Although I think that the image is a too big and should be cut down to focus more on the main characters. I feel from viewing this magazine it gets straight to the point regarding the context, plus it shows clear built point annotations between breakout boxes giving the reader background information.
