Different Audiences Film Magazines

Different audiences for film magazines

Anthony Taylor

There a variety of different audiences available when looking at a variety of different film magazines. All film magazines target different audiences such as age/gender/race/sexuality and other factors which may lead readers into buying a magazine they may be interested in.

Here is an example of a film magazine targeted at a male audience. The quote “Theworld’s biggest movie magazine”, attempts to reassure the audience this is the best film magazine out there in the market which will influence most

young male audiences to buy this magazine rather than a film magazine such as “Total Film”. The use of a glamorous model also catches the reader’s eye which may suggest this film magazine does not appeal too well to women therefore, decreasing female audience and increasing male audience.

Empire film magazine mainly aims at readers who are most interested in sci fi movies which advertise film such as Transformers, Star Trek and many more sci fi action thriller films. However, Empire magazine does not just focus on sci fi films only, in addition it does have a major focus on mainstream movies, and big budget Hollywood films.

Other film magazines such as “Total Film” may target younger audiences as Total film magazine is mostly always up-to-date with the latest films in cinema. This is a big advantage for the film magazine company as young adults are always interested in reading reviews into the latest films.

This picture taken from a Total film magazine shows an image of a recent film, X-men 2. Here the reader can see a full page image of the main character “Wolverine”. This image will attract younger audience as older viewers may find this film magazine less interesting and will also have different tastes for their liking.

Sight and Sound magazine focuses a lot more on independent and art house cinema and therefore has a very different target audience. Sight and Sound is also a British monthly magazine published by the British Film Institute (BFI). Sight and Sound film magazine has a more highbrow reputation than other film magazines as it holds reviews of the latest films each month which includes narrow art house releases, as opposed to the more mainstream focus of its competitors. Sight and Sound also features a full cast and crew credit list for each film reviewed. This film magazine will aim at an audience with a strong taste in the variety of films which are newly released. Film fanatics who are willing to spend a monthly subscription will receive full complete updates for new release films allowing the reader to make their own decisions on whether to watch certain films. However film magazines such as Sight and Sound may not appeal well to younger audiences due to very long reviews and the payment issue of a monthly subscription. Counter to this are online reviews in which younger audiences will be able to read basic reviews on films with no cost. In summary, Sight and Sound is a great film magazine which can be targeted at older audiences who have a strong taste in the type of films they wish to watch and are willing to pay for full synopsis and reviews.

Overall, all types of film magazines will target certain audiences hoping to attract their desired audience such as young adults to older readers. Film magazines can target huge impacts depending on the content of their magazine and how well their target audience will react to them.
